Release:  UMHB Hosts Successful Outreach

The University of Mary Hardin Baylor (UMHB) Nursing Student Association (NSA) sponsored a Halloween Party on October 30, 2007 from 6:30-9:30 pm at the Gober Party House in Temple, TX.  The nursing students of UMHB work in collaboration with the ARC (formerly The Association for Retarded Citizens) of Bell County in planning and organizing the celebration.  Only clients with intellectual and developmental disabilities and families members were invited.  This year’s theme for the Halloween dance was “Nurses Through the Decades” where students and faculty wore costumes that varied from old-fashioned to contemporary nursing uniforms.  Students donated snacks, decorations, and sacrificed a night’s worth of studying to dance the night away with costumed vampires, ghosts, pirates, hippies, UMHB fans, construction workers, and cheerleaders.

was to provide a safe atmosphere for socializing between the clients, their families, and NSA volunteers.  Often times, the same patrons attend.  Nursing students gain a wealth of knowledge and experience.  In an interview with Amanda Craft, a graduate and previous NSA projects chairperson, students still remember the thanks, smiles, laughs, dances, and socializing that occurs during the “parties.”  Families of clients write letters of appreciation and even a “letter to the editor” of Temple Daily Telegram expressing their thanks.  In a newspaper and television interview with Soumaly Rattanasavanh, Image of Nursing chairperson, students meet the warmest and friendliest people and are privileged to participate.  Lastly, the attendees are able to interact with the UMHB NSA members and faculty advisors in a professional, therapeutic and fun fashion.  It truly is a win-win approach to promote the true “Image of Nursing” to the community.
