TNSA President
South Plains College, Levelland, Texas

Where are you from?
I am originally from northern Minnesota. I was born and raised there until I was 12 years old. I then moved to Conroe, Texas where I graduated in 1996 from Conroe High. After moving to Lubbock in August of 1996 to attend TTU, I decided to stick around.

What was your favorite experience when running at state?
My favorite experience was making a fool of myself by answering “I do” when the president asked if I accepted the nomination for office. You have to laugh at yourself, right?

Why did you decide to run for a state office?
When I arrived in Houston it was my first convention for TNSA. I originally planned on running for Secretary-Treasurer, because I that was my position on the local level. Therefore, I thought it would be great to expand my horizons, so to speak. However, upon arriving at the convention in Houston, I was so intrigued at how professionally the organization was run, and I knew that I had to be more involved. After talking to Lynn Weick and Keith Theirry, the past TNSA State President, I decided I would like to be President and the voice for TNSA.

What is something people probably do not know about you?
I started dancing when I was 3 years old. I did ballet for 13 years, tap and jazz for 11 years, and Drill Team for 3 years!

TNSA Vice President
Texas Tech University Health Science Center, Lubbock, Texas

Where are you from?
Aledo , TX

What was your favorite experience when running at state?
Meet the Candidates. It was interesting to see what questions people would come up with, because some people have great imaginations! I really learned a lot about public speaking and how I felt about certain issues!

What is something people probably do not know about you?
I LOVE Mexican food, I would eat it for every meal if I could!

TNSA Secretary-Treasurer
Covenant SON, Lubbock, Texas

Where are you from?
Littlefield , Texas

Why did you decide to run for a state office?
My classmates were very involved and encouraged us to be that way as well.  I really wanted to do something where I could make a difference.

What is something people probably do not know about you?
I was a theater major for 3 years at Texas Tech.

TNSA Western Regional Director

Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas

Where are you from?
Austin , Texas

Why did you decide to run for a state office?
TNSA represents leadership and professionalism among nursing students. I wanted to help lead the organization in promoting professionalism within nursing.

Is there anything you wish you would have done differently at convention?
I would have researched more about current hot topics and issues in the nursing profession.

What is something people probably do not know about you?
I was present for both my little brother’s and sister’s birth. I got to cut their umbilical cords!

TNSA Southern Regional Director

University of Texas, Austin, Texas

Where are you from?
Navasota , TX

Why did you decide to run for a state office?
I wanted to get more involved at the state level. I had previously been very active at my local level, but not so much at the state level. This was a huge jump for me and I am so excited that I went through with it.

What is something people probably do not know about you?
Ummm…I have to think hard about this question! Probably that I am not a die hard Texas football fan like everyone thinks I am or should be. While I go to some, I definitely do not go to all the games, nor do I stay the entire game. GO HORNS!

TNSA Nominating Chairman
Covenant School of Nursing, Lubbock, Texas

Where are you from?
Dallas , Texas

Is there anything you wish you would have done differently at convention?
I wish I had been prepared and slept more. I also think it is important to speak form your heart. Don’t let other people tell you what to say, your words will not have the passion behind them that people are looking for and wanting.

What is something people probably do not know about you?
I am really clumsy and, at times, really dingy!

President’s Message
Danielle Strandlien

GREETINGS FELLOW TNSA MEMBERS! I hope that everyone’s semester is going well!

I am happy to report that this year’s Council of Schools was a huge success! Despite the recent tragedies with the hurricanes there was a great turn out with over 200 members in attendance! In addition, your TNSA board of director’s is now complete with the addition of our new editor Breann McIlhenny from UT Tyler. As well, Kenneth Brooks from Midwestern State University was also elected to serve as the Chair of the TNSA Council of School Presidents. While there we were able to break out into regions which allowed everyone a great opportunity to meet others from across the state.

As most of you know the biggest event of the year is coming and this is our TNSA State Convention! This year it is going to be held in San Antonio this year at the Omni hotel February 14 th-18th. The theme for this year’s convention is “Nursing, The Career of Endless Opportunity”. We have a full three days packed with many exciting things to do and see. Some of the many things that you can participate in and experience are several different focus sessions, the 19 th annual auction, chapter awards and scholarship banquet, the career exhibit hall, and you can’t forget the Opening Night Party! The theme for this year’s party is “Legends in their own time” so come dressed as your favorite “hero”!

I want to congratulate all of you that are graduating this semester! I wish you success as you enter the profession of nursing! For those of us that will be returning in the Spring I want to encourage you to press on through the remainder of the semester as the holidays will soon be here and we can take a much needed break!

I look forward to seeing all of you in San Antonio in February at the TNSA State Convention!

I want to take this time to talk about the TNSA board’s exciting semester. First of all, we are still in the progress of getting the new TNSA website in order. I will let you know more about the progress as it comes my way, but get ready because it is going to be awesome! Also, the board is currently working on getting ready for State Convention, so I would like to give you some information about how to prepare.

I can not believe it, but State Convention is right around the corner. Convention will be held FEBRUARY 16, 2006 – FEBRUARY 18, 2006 in San Antonio, TX, which is a great location for the Southern Schools. The South has not had a very good turn out in the previous years, so I hope to see more schools from our region this year. Here is some more information regarding state:

*To Find more information regarding state convention, please visit our webpage at www.tnsa.org and click on “Convention” or look in your TNSA Chapter Information Guide.

Also, please do not forget about applying for any scholarships or local chapter awards. I would love to see the South blow the other regions away this year at state. All of the forms can be found in the TNSA Chapter Information Guide! If you need any help or have questions about running for office please contact me. Last year was definitely an experience that I will not forget, because I had no idea what I was doing while running for office. I am here to assist you in any way that is needed. I would love to have several people running from our region. Let me know if you interested in running.

I will be personally contacting local chapters to see the progress they have made throughout the semester. So, look forward to hearing from me, as I am interested to hear how things are going for everyone in the South.

Happy Holidays,
Cassi Kopycinski TNSA Southern Regional Director

Western Region
April Peralez

Hello to all the West Texas TNSA members and nursing students. I hope the new school year has gone well for everyone. I know this fall semester has been busy and exciting for me.

Since the convention last February, I have attended the three official board of directors meetings where we planned aspects of this year’s events and other official business. In October of 2005, TNSA had its annual Council of Schools Conference in Arlington. I was thrilled that it was a success; however I did miss some of the western region schools. At COS the board announced the Penny War as one of our state community projects. Each region will be competing against each other to raise the most money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Each school should raise money and bring to convention in San Antonio. Pennies and dollars add to our total, while silver change subtracts from our total. Be sure to bring silver change to dump into all the other regions, and pennies and dollars for our region. Every $600 raised sends one child to muscular dystrophy camp for one week.

I hope to see all of you at convention in San Antonio this year. There are many awards to apply for and resolutions are needed. For more details about convention please check out our website at www.tnsa.org. If your chapter wants to send students to convention but lack the funds, please email me at tnsadirectorwest@hotmail.com. I can offer some quick fundraising ideas. For instance, your school could try holding a raffle for donated items from local businesses.

As the school year continues, I would like to hear form all of my chapter presidents. I am still lacking contact information for some schools. If you have not heard from me by telephone or email please send me an email with your information. I want to stay current with your chapter’s events and help address any questions.

April Peralez
Western Regional Director
